Claire Summerscale
4NCL Chairman

Claire Summerscale
We would like to welcome Claire as the new 4NCL chairman, taking over from IM Paul Littlewood who has been at the helm for a decade.

Chess trainer, author and journalist/editor (ECF Junior magazine, The Right Move), radio personality (Radio 4) and authority on women’s chess and current ECF director of Junior Chess & Education, Claire brings fresh impetus to the role in addition to a unique wealth of experience.

Recently, as manager of Pride & Prejudice, an all-female team with token male Grandmaster – husband Aaron Summerscale, she has successfully challenged the perceived wisdom that women cannot compete with men at the highest levels of chess, evidenced by their rapid rise in the 4NCL ranks.

No stranger to the media, Claire has appeared several times on Radio 4 and captained the Pride & Prejudice team on their TV debut on BBC2s quiz show Eggheads. Claire is married to English Grandmaster Aaron Summerscale, with whom she currently teaches chess full-time.

Claire has recently set up a new Junior Grand Prix, which uniquely allows the winners to receive direct entry to represent England in the 2008 World Youth Championships, aided by funding from the ECF John Robinson Trust.

We wish Claire every success in her new post.
