Division 4 to expand in 2003/04

The 4NCL or National Chess League is the country’s premier chess league. Formed in 1993 with six teams, this year it will complete its tenth season. Division 4 currently has eight teams and it is envisaged this number will increase for the 2003-2004 season. Applications are invited from clubs wishing to play in the expanding Division 4.

A team usually represents a club but can also be formed from an amalgamation of adjacent clubs or can represent a league. Division 4 is for teams of six players and there is no gender requirement as there is in the higher divisions.

The precise number of rounds will be determined by the number of competing teams. A full season normally spans five weekends with one round on Saturday and one on Sunday. One weekend is the late-May Bank Holiday weekend when, by utilising the holiday Monday, an extra round can be played if the fixtures so require.

Division 4 will played at the West Bromwich Moat House Hotel on the following dates :-

  • 22nd/23rd November 2003
  • 24th/25th January 2004
  • 27th/28th March 2004
  • 29th/30th/31st May 2004
  • 19th/20th June 2004
Play begins at 11 a.m. on the last day of each weekend but at 2 p.m. on the other days. On each weekend, divisions 3rd and 4th will be playing together.

It is important that a team is fully committed, able to raise a full complement of players and to fulfil all its fixtures. Opposing teams who have travelled a good distance and paid for overnight accommodation do not welcome wins by default.

If you are interested and require further information, please contact Mike Truran or Richard Furness.
