Member of the Nottingham High School team that made the Final of the (Sunday) Times Schools Competition in 1982 and 1985.
We twice played St. Paul’s School, Barnes, in the Final. We lost. Twice.
Appropriated a variety of East Midlands & Midlands junior titles in the early- to mid-Eighties.
After founding and launching the 4NCL at the Barbican in October 1993, organised over a dozen self-financing internationals in 1994 and 1995 (Café Baroque, St. Peter’s, Croydon etc…) initiated by a suggestion from Andrew Harley.
Inaugurated scholastic chess programmes in South & West London in the mid- to late-Nineties. Aided Marek Turowski with the National ‘Chess as a Sport’ Campaign that he ran (MP Charlotte Atkins’ EDM 1609).
Inventor of the highly dubious opening gambit - 1.d4 g6 2.c4 Bg7 3.e4 d5??! - that has 100% (2/2) at international level.
