European Club Championship
22-28 September
Kallithea (Greece)

The most prestigious club event in European chess - the European Club Cup (ECC) - will take place this year in Greece.

The dates are 22-28 September in Kallithea, Halkidiki in Greece.

This is the 18th edition of the annual event. The format changed two years ago to the current 7-round swiss system format.

This means that all teams get to play seven matches, and International Norms (7-round) ARE POSSIBLE in this event.

This is the first time that the new format ECC has not clashed with the 4NCL, and it would be nice to see full English representation in this event.

The English Federation (BCF) allocates its places to the top teams in the 4NCL - we get two automatic places, plus a third because the League is sufficiently strong.

These three places can be handed down, but the competing teams must have finished in the top half of the top division of their national league.

I have competed in the ECC both of the last two years (in Croatia and Crete) with the Welsh Champions Monmouth, and have found the event to be highly enjoyable, and an excellent opportunity to make a norm.

For further information see the ECU (European Chess Union) website and that of the Greek hosts and details of last year's ECC in Crete.

The ECC entry deadline for teams is 15 July, whilst the basic players list deadline is 15 August.

The 4NCL Board would be interested in hearing from clubs who are keen to represent England in this event.

Contact the 4NCL Chairman Paul Littlewood if interested.
