This website includes information on participants in the Four Nations Chess League in respect of name, grade, title, nationality and sex (team registration lists), as well as telephone number(s), email address(es) and postal address(es) in certain circumstances (team captains/managers, management board members, arbiters etc). January at Telford

When, last May, we were told the Birmingham Grand was to close and that the bookings and dates we had settled months before had been lost, the 4NCL Board sought other venues. Telford was the only hotel we found which was sufficiently large to accommodate all the divisions of our expanding league and which was prepared to offer playing accommodation at no charge.

One of the prices the league has had to pay, in return for accommodating teams' wishes to have all divisions in one venue as far as possible, is poorer public transport facilities to and from Telford. Indeed, we understand that the last train from Telford for London connections on Sundays normally leaves at 16.36, and that engineering works during the January weekend mean that this train will be replaced by an even earlier coach service from Telford to Wolverhampton at just after 3 p.m. to connect with London services.

During the years the League was based in the centre of Birmingham, rail was more appealing to many teams than was travelling by car because of the shortage of car parking facilities in central Birmingham. The situation has now changed since our current venues at West Bromwich and Telford both have large car parks. We ask any team which was planning to travel by train to investigate carefully the possibilities of travelling by car. This is likely to be a cheaper option than rail travel.

We acknowledge that not all teams consist of players from the same geographical area and that there may be a few teams containing one or two players who are somewhat isolated. If you will be travelling by car and can take another passenger, please let us know and we will post your offer on the website. Equally, if you need a lift, that request can be advertised in a similar way.

Where two opposing captains agree to an earlier start to the Sunday round, the league will accommodate this.

Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year,
Paul Littlewood (4NCL Chairman)
