Wellington International

Wellington International - 30th Jan. - 1st Feb. and 7th - 8th Feb. Open FIDE rated event (5 rounds 1st weekend, 4 rounds 2nd weekend). Qualifying event for 2004 British Championships and part of the BCF Grand Prix. Games will also be rated by BCF. Cash prizes and a free place in 2004 British Championships (to the highest placed player not already qualified). Fees reduced for juniors, unemployed, disabled,etc.

IM and FM entries received and awaiting GM confirmation. Some free half-board accommodation and travel is available to titled players. Free light refreshments will be provided to all players.

5th WELLINGTON COLLEGE INTERNATIONAL (FIDE OPEN)

This event is FIDE rated and part of the British Chess Federation Grand Prix. The event takes place over 2 weekends: Friday 30th January to Sunday 1st February 2004 and Saturday 7th to Sunday 8th February 2004

Venue: Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire RG45 7PU (35 miles south west of London)

Tournament Director: IM Andrew Martin. Chief Controller: Neville Belinfante (BCF Arbiter)

Background
This growing event allows players to improve/obtain their international FIDE rating without taking a week off from studies/work. If there is a sufficiently large non-English entry with high enough grades then IM norms may be possible. We expect more IM’s this year. If you are from outside England and need a visa ask the Tournament Secretary for a letter to support your visa application.

Format
A 9 round Open FIDE Swiss tournament over 2 weekends. Players who can only enter one weekend should contact the tournament secretary. Rate of play is 40 moves in 2 hours followed by all remaining moves in 1 hour. No adjournments.

Prizes Fund £1,000
This includes a paid place in the 2004 British Championships (highest placed player not previously qualified). The prize fund and allocation depends on entry. The organisers reserve the right to reduce prizes.

Entry fees:
GM, IM, WGM, WIM free; FM & WFM £25; players rated 2300 & above £30; players rated 2100 – 2295 £40; players rated 1800 - 2095 £50; players rated below 1800 and above BCF174 £60; players below BCF175 £70. Deductions: players under 21 yrs on 1st January 2004 £10; players over 60 yrs on 1st January 2004 £10; disabled players (apply in confidence) £10. BCF Direct Members can claim a £2 refund (show BCF card to organisers at event).

Further deductions are available for those in financial difficulties – contact tournament secretary in confidence.

Venue
Wellington College in Crowthorne, Berkshire. Enter from junction of Sandhurst Road and Crowthorne Road. Situated 35 miles south west of London between M3 (junction 4) and M4 (junction 10) and within easy reach of M25 and M40. For map enter post code RG45 7PU on internet site www.multimap.com. Smoking is not permitted at the venue except in designated areas. Light refreshments will be provided.

Tournament conditions
Byes (for any round) can be requested on the entry form. FIDE and BCF rules require FIDE rated players to be members of their national federation. The organizers reserve the right to refuse any entry without assigning a reason. Grades will be taken from the latest FIDE or national list. Results will be graded by both FIDE and BCF.

Cheques should be made payable to 'Southern Chess' (send stamped addressed envelope for confirmation). A late entry fee of £3 will be charged on entries post marked after 27th January 2004. Entries at the venue will be at the discretion of the organizers (telephone first to check availability of places). Refunds will only be made if notification of withdrawal is made to the Tournament Secretary at least 24 hours before the event starts. A deduction of 20% will normally be made from any refund of entry fee.
