place during the London Chess Classic from Thurs 8 December to Fri 16 December.
Because the first round loser
prize at the British Knockout Championship
amounts to £2,500, players occupying the first
two places in the Open section will not be
eligible for the prizes on offer at the congress
itself. That means of course that any player
finishing outside the first two places in the
Open section will be eligible for the
congress
prizes. These are: 1st
£500; 2nd £250; 3rd £125.

Assembly of the FIDE Congress.

other day we announced that
two norms had been achieved, those of James
Adair and Matthew Wadsworth.
It has now become apparent that
we published based on incomplete
information and, in fact, 5
norms were achieved in all.

Yang-Fan Zhou got his second GM
norm which is a great
achievement in itself, but even
more so given that not only did
he have to face strong
opposition throughout 4NCL, but
he was feeling very unwell
during last weekend’s games.
Congratulations are also due to
James Jackson, who received his
2nd IM norm, and Matthew
Wadsworth his first. Both are
very promising young players,
have a very good chance of
achieving the IM title soon and
have the potential to build on
these successes and be on course
for GM results.
We also extend
our congratulations to David
Fitzsimons from Ireland who
qualified for his first IM norm.

tournament, but did you know that that British chess league
features dozens of teams and over 800 players? WIM Fiona
Steil-Antoni is the captain of a team including the likes of
David Howell and Simon Williams, and gives us a glimpse
behind the scenes of the event before the final weekend of
the 2015-16 season.
Ever since I made my 4NCL debut in February 2011, this has
been one of my favourite events. But before I go any
further, let’s start with a bit of history and an
introduction to what the 4NCL actually is, as I often get
the impression it's one of the lesser-known leagues in
Europe.

Weekend 1
The 4NCL held its fifth team
and individual rapidplay championships for all from all interested teams and players. The championships
took place at
Holiday
Inn Birmingham Airport.
Winners will hold the title of 4NCL Team and Individual
Rapidplay Champion respectively for 2015-16.
The 4NCL team event took place on Saturday 3 October
starting at 1.00pm. The Individual Rapidplay took place on
Sunday 4 Oct starting at 9.30am. The J4NCL event took place on
Saturday and Sunday 3-4 October. All events took place at the
Holiday Inn, Birmingham Airport.

Guildford set to win by
a distance. The battle
at the top has always
been partly financial,
as backers of rival
teams fly in
grandmasters from across
Europe for key matches.
But this season
Guildford are way ahead
in the sponsorship
stakes, a Chelsea or
Manchester City
equivalent facing
moderately bankrolled
rivals. The effect was
highlighted in last
Saturday’s Guildford v
Oxford match, where the
Surrey club’s rating
average of 2533,
middling GM level, was
around 360 points higher
than the mixture of
academics, juniors and
locals who took to the
board for the Dark
Blues.
